Interview with the Vampire (1994)

Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles is a 1994 film directed by Neil Jordan, based on the 1976 novel Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, and starring Tom Cruise andBrad Pitt. The film focuses on Lestat (Cruise) and Louis (Pitt), beginning with Louis’ transformation into a vampire by Lestat in 1791. The film chronicles their time together, and their turning of a twelve-year-old girl, Claudia, into a vampire. The narrative is framed by a present-day interview, in which Louis tells his story to a San Francisco reporter.

The film was released in November 1994 to generally positive critical acclaim and received Oscar nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Original Score. Kirsten Dunst was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film.

Book author Anne Rice wrote the screenplay in the 1970s with French actor Alain Delon in mind for the role of Louis.[5] Later on when the film was made British actor Julian Sands was considered to play the role of Lestat by Rice herself; but, because Sands was not a well-known name at the time, being only famed for his performance in A Room with a View, he was rejected and the role was given to Tom Cruise. This was initially criticised by Anne Rice, who said that Cruise was “no more my Vampire Lestat than Edward G. Robinson is Rhett Butler” and the casting was “so bizarre; it’s almost impossible to imagine how it’s going to work”. Nevertheless, she was satisfied with Cruise’s performance after seeing the completed film, saying that “from the moment he appeared, Tom was Lestat for me” and “that Tom did make Lestat work was something I could not see in a crystal ball.”

Plot
A night in San Francisco, during our time: A young journalist follows a man through the streets and they end up in an anonymous room. When the journalist starts to interview the man, the stranger tells him that he is a vampire, being over 200 years old. The journalist doesn’t believe him, but after the man proves it’s true, he tells his story: His name is Louis and in the 18th century New Orleans he was 24, by this time owner of an estate and a widower already. One night, when he once again was destroying himself by drinking and other things, he was found by Lestat, a vampire, who bit him. But even after becoming a vampire, life wasn’t fun for Louis until one night he met a little girl, Claudia, who would change his existence forever.
